Nike cross training

Nike cross training

Push yourself further with a new workout and the right shoe.

Cross-training is a valuable and often neglected component of endurance training. Recent studies show that regular cross-training—a plyo circuit, a bootcamp-style workout class, or even some boulder hopping—yields real results on race day. If you’re considering adding some variety to your routine, or if your schedule already includes cross-training, you should be wearing shoes that can withstand the stress and protect you from injury. For most, that means swapping your running shoes for trainers—like the ones below—with more support. Read on to find out why cross-training is important for runners.

Why You Should Cross Train

Consider a 2017 study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology that showed introducing well-trained ultramarathon runners to explosive plyometric workouts for just 12 weeks was enough to see a 4 percent increase in running economy. In other words, the runners showed a 4 percent decrease in the amount of energy and oxygen required to maintain race pace.

Cross-training works because running the same miles for months is monotonous for our legs. Our muscles adapt to the work, become more adept at managing stress, and, because they’re never pushed beyond the limit they’ve already reached, strength increases taper. Progress plateaus soon after. When injected into the middle of our running calendar, cross-training targets disused muscle groups more directly and makes novel demands on our already conditioned muscles. In the off-season, cross-training is active recovery: a way to build strength while the major muscles we’ve taxed and tired are rebuilding.

How We Chose

We looked for shoes with reinforced heels and other targeted support systems that would firm up the foot during lateral movements, a midsole that was either cushioned and flexible for impact absorption and agility during plyometrics, or dense and sturdy enough to withstand weighted squats, and grippy outsoles for secure ground contact during all of this.

These shoes have all these qualities and a few extra. Happy training.

—BEST FOR CROSSFIT—

Reebok Nano 9

  • Wide base from heel to toe
  • Responsive midsole
  • Single- density midsole feels firm when running

The Reebok Nano is the CrossFit community’s other favorite multi-purpose trainer. In what can be considered an overhaul, the new Nano 9 introduces an even stretchier Flexweave design in a taut but airy woven upper, a broad heel and high TPU sidewalls in place of a bulky heel counter, and a crisp EVA midsole made flexible by an outsole with a decoupled heel and Reebok’s Metasplit grooves. You’ll appreciate the wide base on your heavy weight days (it’s wide even for a CrossFit-specific trainer) and the responsive midsole during a plyo circuit, but, even with the segmented outsole, the shoe’s single-density midsole makes it a less pliable runner. This is a small gripe, though, for a shoe that’s clearly made to grip a gym floor.

—BEST UPDATE—

Under Armour Project Rock 2

  • Springy mesh-wrapped foam midsole
  • Compression-fit bootie hugs foot
  • The aggressive aesthetic is a bit. much
Читайте также:  Атмосферное давление 746

If we had a Most Improved award to offer, we’d hand it to Under Armour’s Project Rock 2, an update to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s multi-purpose trainer. The flashy celebrity branding and the bold-but-forced high-top bootie fit (thankfully toned down from the first model) will be a bit much for some, but when we look past the aesthetic missteps, we see an increasingly versatile trainer smartly adding several of UA’s best technologies. The newly added HOVR midsole makes a soft, high-cushioning foam springier and more responsive by wrapping it with a tight mesh web. The outsole now features UA’s Tribase form: triangle-shaped grooves that anchor the heels and toes while allowing multi-directional flex, and traction, under the forefoot. For added stability, a TPU counter now firms up the once-naked heel. Finally, the compression-fit bootie upper with quarter panel overlays incorporated into the lacing gives a lot of lock down to the fit. Wear these when you need a stable base for weights but you also want to bounce.

—BEST MINIMALIST TRAINER—

Altra Solstice XT

  • Zero-drop with some cushion
  • Crazy durable liquid rubber overlay
  • Minimalist shoe translates to less support

The Altra Solstice XT wraps durable, gym-friendly details around a low-cushioned road running midsole. New quarter panel overlays on the upper use liquid rubber (instead of the typical polyurethane) for its greater flexibility and abrasion resistance, said Altra co-founder Brian Beckstead. The outsole takes advantage of the same segmented design that allows the shoe to flex with the forefoot, but swaps the Solstice’s exposed EVA foam (critiqued for its short life) for a tough, sticky, floor-gripping rubber. The zero-drop midsole—23mm stack, balanced heel-to-toe cushioning, and a wide forefoot—still caters to minimalist runners, but, when considered alongside the XT’s added structural support and durability, it could easily be reinterpreted as a stable base for varied gym days.

—BEST FOR AGILITY—

Mizuno TC-01

  • Underfoot pods enhance ground-feel
  • Flexible outsole promotes natural foot movement
  • Some won’t like the feel of underfoot pods

The Mizuno TC-01 aims to enhance performance by using an innovative bit of underfoot technology to improve balance. A flexible grid on the shoe’s rubber outsole corresponds to a layer of pea-sized round pods in the soft, poly foam midsole. The raised texture from the pods against the bottom of the foot amplifies the feeling of ground contact and sends back more information with every step. Tight design makes the rest of the TC-01 an agile bounding shoe. Internal midfoot straps and a plush collar keep the knit bootie upper fitting close to the foot, and the reinforced heel, while laterally supportive, is narrower than the broad-based, weight-day-ready trainers in the cross-training category. The flat outsole and 4mm heel drop are shaped for weight days, but the soft foam midsole is better suited for box jumps and speed ladders.

—MOST VERSATILE—

Nike Metcon 5

  • Dual-density midsole with a firm heel and flexible forefoot
  • Wider heel gives greater lateral stability
  • Plush forefoot means less snap

The Nike Metcon 5 adds a wider platform and a more flexible step to a Metcon line already beloved by many in the CrossFit community for its grounding stability during weight-heavy workouts and the smart design that allows it to move with the foot during dynamic exercises. The improved base comes, in part, from the outsole, where the heel flares noticeably before tapering to meet a familiar TPU heel counter. On top of this, a new dual-density drop-in midsole gets away with a firmer foam under the heel by fusing it with a plush and pliable forefoot that makes this the most flexible Metcon yet. A wider toe box allows more room for toe splay when planting and pushing off, and, when paired with the greater range of motion, means the front half of this update is also more runner-friendly (there’s just no escaping the reinforced heel’s rigidity). If your cross-training leverages variety in the gym, the new Metcon 5 might be the one-shoe-fits-all solution you need.

—BEST FOR WEIGHT-HEAVY DAYS—

New Balance Minimus Prevail

  • Slimmer profile than other cross trainers
  • Lightweight snappy midsole
  • Narrow toe box

The Minimus Prevail takes gym-ready details necessary for an adaptive cross-trainer and wraps them around a true minimalist sole. The drop-in midsole, made from New Balance’s lightweight REVlite foam, is thin and snappy, and, paired with the flat one-piece Vibram outsole, offers less cushion and more ground-feel than other trainers. And, while many other gym shoes are seeing their rope-ready sidewalls climbing higher and heel counters wrapping fatter, the Minimus Prevail moves in the other direction, incorporating both into a slim, unobtrusive profile. The woven upper, instead of relying on a TPU overlay for durability, incorporates the poly plastic into its fibers. The mesh fabric breathes as expected, but it’s less flexible—though, with the minimalist profile offering less lateral stability than bulkier trainers, the taut hold helps. In an odd departure from standard minimalist trainer design, the Prevail features a relatively narrow forefoot and a toe box that leaves little room for toe splay. Even so, most true minimalist runners will approve of this trainer because there’s just not much of it there.
